ARTIST CAROL SANDERS - is an Ontario born author, businesswoman, mother and grandmother. Recently returned from a family visit to Australia, proved an inspiration to paint, and having been fascinated with the Aboriginal Dreamtime Paintings, the feelings were incorporation into her art, with a Northern Ontario flair. Each painting is unique and diverse in its own way, there is an underlying influence from the West Coast and the Native culture, which is near to her heart. All canvases are painted in acrylic, tone on tone to create texture and dimension and in the style of Dot Art Painting. Each is an adventure into the psyche of the artist.
In the Style of Aboriginal Dot Art Painting in Acrylics on Canvas
Acrylic paints are water-based so they are easy to work with and there is no need for dangerous solvents. The paint film formed by these paints is very strong and flexible. The most important characteristic of acrylics is the fact that they can be used thin and liquid as watercolor or thick, right out of the tube like oil paint. Acrylics dry very quickly, taking from just a few minutes or up to an hour or so for very thick applications. Unlike watercolors, which dry lighter than when they are wet, acrylics dry slightly darker. Acrylics are extremely durable. The question about expected life has been tested repeatedly in laboratory-controlled exposures to heat and light. Acrylics do not exhibit the same changes as oils, which suggests that the life of acrylics is greater than almost all other artists' materials.
The dot paintings of the Desert peoples are often also called sand paintings. This reference stems from their genesis in ground paintings that are created by clans as they move from place to place in the desert. The clan gathers around a central site, which is cleared so that "paintings" can be created using seeds, flowers, sand, stones, feathers, and other natural substances. The clan elders sing their way through the painting process, imparting tribal knowledge to younger members of the clan. The various symbols are explained and interpreted as lessons in the clan's history and heritage, its creation story, and the location of sacred sites, food sources, and water holes. Today, these designs are painted on art board and canvas for sale to the outside world. While the precise meanings of the designs are usually unclear to outsiders, they have deep cultural significance to clan members. Details usually are not revealed to anyone outside the clan. Even then, only males who 'graduate' to high rank in the clan learn the full meaning of the designs.

Turtle's Rest This painting is certainly one of the most detailed and was a delight to paint. It embodies elements of earth, water, air and fire, as well as honoring Grandfather Sun and Grandmother Moon. Turtle is said to be the symbol of North America. North East Lake Superior inspired, turtle seeks it's resting place on beautiful Long Beach. Ancient Cambrian Rock formation looks like turtle shell and is rippled with crystal quartz, a Lake Trout watches nearby, and a Sandpiper scours the beach. The waves of Lake Superior crash onto the shore and it is the time of the full moon, when sun and moon are in the sky at the same time during the day. |
